  1. Inhabitant of or native to the states of
  2. Jammu and Kashmir, a disputed territory
  3. divided between India and Pakistan. There are
  4. approximately 6 million Kashmiris, 4 million
  5. of whom live on the Indian side of the
  6. cease-fire line. Kashmiri is also an
  7. Indo-European language that the orthodox
  8. write using a Sarada script. Although
  9. Kashmir's ruling families are Hindu, the
  10. majority of the population is Muslim. Among
  11. them live Hindu Brahmins, called pandit, who
  12. perform religious services and are involved
  13. in teaching and administration. The workers,
  14. or karkum, are often wealthier than the
  15. priestly class. In the Vale of Kashmir, the
  16. majority of Muslims are farmers, cultivating
  17. rice, wheat, and other crops. There is also a
  18. Punjabi-speaking Sikh minority, while on the
  19. borders of the Vale there are Muslim Gujars,
  20. who have an affinity with the Hindu Dogra. In
  21. Ladakh to the north, there are Buddhist
  22. peoples who have much in common with
  23. Tibetans. Kashmir had been under the sway of
  24. Hindu India for many centuries when Muslim
  25. rule was established by the 14th century.
  26. Moghul rule began in the 16th century but was
  27. brought to a halt by the Afghan invasion of
  28. 1753. This was followed by a period of Sikh
  29. overlordship.
